The Wolf Man (1941)- Classic Horror Review

Posted on Updated on

“Even a man pure at heart and says his prayers by night, can turn into a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.”

This wonderful couplet comes up many times in The Wolf Man. The Wolf Man is a classic of horror cinema, and while it isn’t the first werewolf movie, it’s certainly what popularized the genre.

Lon Chaney Jr. stars as Larry Talbot, a mild mannered man who comes back to his home village after being away for years. He saves a village girl from being attacked by a wolf one night, but in the process becomes bit by the beast. Now he is haunted to turn into a wolf and kill every night.

Lon Chaney is one of the great screen actors, and you can see the inner turmoil on his face whenever he is on the screen. While he battles with himself and tries to keep his sanity, his father is out to put an end to the wolf nonsense.

The bet part of the movie is the cinematography and set design. We see the werewolf stalk through the foggy London streets. It is haunting and beautiful at the same time.

The Wolf Man is an absolute must see for horror fans.

American Horror Story: Coven- Season Premiere

Posted on Updated on

Last season, American Horror Story: Asylum led the emmy’s. It was a horrifying show, with great acting, full of twists and turns along the way.

Now we come to the new story line, Coven. The opening scene is absolutely brutal. It is set in slavery-era America, and a cold slave owner tortures one of her male slaves for having a consensual relationship with her daughter. She shows her obsession with Minotaurs, and it is legitimately horrifying.

Then the show cuts to modern day, after a traumatic experience losing her virginity, a teenage girl learns that she is a witch. She is taken to a school of only four girls, where they are trained to control there powers. Here we meet the “Supreme” played by Jessica Lang. The Supreme witch is the only witch who can master all the powers.

The season premiere was wonderful, and I can’t wait to see where is goes from here.

The Curse of Chucky- Movie Review

Posted on Updated on

I’ll admit it; I love slasher films. There is something magical about watching a low budget horror flick with a big bowl of popcorn and the moon shining in through the window.

Chucky, though, is one of the weaker of the slasher villains. Adding to this is that the reboot to the series is “Straight to DVD.” My expectations were not overly high.

The Curse of Chucky is directed by Don Mancini and stars Fiona Dourif as the paralyzed lead Nica. The story is your typical horror fare; A family gets a mysterious package with an evil doll inside. The doll, named Chucky, slowly picks off the members in this family one by one.

The cast is there to scream and bleed. In that regards they did well, but there wasn’t a performance that was memorable.

But what about the kills?! Fortunately, the film shines where it needed to be. Decapitations, eye balls popped out, and more blood shed happen, all with Chucky giving ghoulish one liners along the way. I do wish the film was a little faster paced. The first half is mostly exposition, and Chucky doesn’t start his killing spree until the second half.

Calling this a flawed, cliche mess is not an exaggeration. But the kills were nice.
